How Do I Get the Most From My Job References?
Denver, CO April 29, 2006
"In today's competitive job market, you need to have a plan for getting the most from your references," says a ITS's Managing Director, Dr. Bob West. "They just might be the key to achieving your job search goals." ITS is a leading provider of technology and personal team resources to executives, managers and professionals seeking jobs at from $75K to $1 million+.
How many references should you have? Three is usually the minimum, according to Dr. West. It's best to plan on having six available from which to choose, according to the strengths that are most sought after by the employer. References can be coached to emphasize selected strengths.
Who might be your most important references? Dr. West suggests you select people you reported to in the past, or their superiors, Choose the highest level reference that will provide an enthusiastic endorsement. Other individuals to consider include professional service providers (attorneys, accountants, etc.), bankers, and well respected leaders of business and trade associations or not-for profit organizations. They should be familiar with your background and achievements, and should have no hesitation about making strong, positive statements about you.
Prepare your references with care. Let them know you have a high regard for their opinions; and make sure they know the full story about you by providing them a copy of your resume or biography. Follow up your initial discussion with a thank you note which can also include a summary of your most compelling attributes. Finally, make sure you let them know when you've offered their name to an employer or recruiter.
